How to decode a BMW VIN
Step-by-step: enter the 17-character VIN, read the decoded chassis/engine/options, then jump to OEM parts.
- Find the 17-character VIN
Look on the lower windshield, the driver-side door jamb sticker or the V5/title document. Skip I, O and Q — BMW VINs use 0–9 and A–Z minus those three.
- Paste the VIN into the decoder
Use the decoder above. The site identifies the brand from the WMI (first three characters) and routes the lookup automatically.
- Read the decoded factory record
We show chassis, model year, engine, paint, plant, factory options (SA codes) and any owner's manual we can match. Each tab carries a provenance badge so you know whether the answer came from BMW first-party data or a fallback decoder.
- Browse OEM parts that fit this VIN
Click the 'Shop OEM parts' link to jump to the bmv.parts catalog filtered to this exact chassis.

Frequently asked questions
What is a VIN?
A Vehicle Identification Number is a 17-character code that uniquely identifies a vehicle. The first three characters identify the manufacturer (WMI), the next six describe the vehicle (VDS), and the final eight are the unique serial number (VIS).
Which brands are supported?
BMW, MINI, ALPINA, Rolls-Royce, and BMW Motorrad. Other manufacturers fall outside our catalog scope.
Where does the data come from?
We pull the build sheet directly from BMW's first-party catalog endpoints (vehicle, options, images, manuals). The provenance line at the bottom of every VIN page tells you which source delivered each tab.
Is bmv.vin free?
Yes. Decoding a VIN, viewing the build sheet, and browsing the chassis/year/plant/paint/option hubs are all free with no signup required.
